Hello! I’m curious about when matching patterns on cloth is appropriate. Of course, a large plaid would be very noticeable and having every line match up would make a difference. In the case of a small houndstooth, is the same care taken to have everything match? If so, how can that be accomplished when cutting and sewing to ensure things match perfectly? Thanks!

Great question. Pattern matching is a relatively new concept. Its probably only around since the 90's. If you ever get the chance to see anything made by hand in the 80's or earlier nothing matched. I made myself a plaid suit for Cheltenham and to get around trying to match all the checks I cut a one piece front, so no sidebody. I place the chestline across a check so I can match in the back. The sleeves are tricky you have to mark the check that's mid way across the chest above the peck on the pattern then apply it to the cloth.
