EDIT - solution in the replies and finished trousers in a comment below.
Hi people - no linen at the fabric shop today so I bought a roll end of chalk stripe - and now I have a question.
Should I lay out as in the first photo with the stripe parallel to the center of the lower leg OR 2nd photo with the stripe parallel [ish] to the side seam? Center leg seems obvious but this will lead to severe VVVVVV’s at the side seam. so Im tempted to go for side seam... Advice?
just sew in an additional fork piece and keep it pants on grain
SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM
I read in one of my old tailoring books to add on and take off the front and back patterns to straighten up the seam edges - for me this was moving the side seam 1.5" back at the top and this made a HUGE difference.
HI - not as bad as you might think - shifting the seam 1.5" make a way ****** difference than you would think. This said - we have yet to see what they turn out like!?!?!?
This is the back part with a tape running up the middle.
I can’t answer because Ive never thought of this issue- so your post is good because now I will. Fabric looks nice though!
Purpose of cutting trouser legs on the grain, is that they will hang straight down. Cutting the cloth diagonally to follow the side seam will result in legs not hanging straight down anymore - depending on the deviation, warping and pulling will occur.
