That seems logical, I was giving some thought about your comment regarding more horizontal room at the back of my jacket and wondered if I should have takin less off the back panel. That would have in turn given me a larger half back measurement.
I will try this on my next coat project.
So many things to consider with tailoring......But I guess that is the point. I suspect that after making 3 - 5 coats the pattern should get better and need less corrections after the pocket baste.
Yes, in my opinion fitting is much, much harder than actually assembling the coat (which is generally the same for every person). There's a reason why the 'cutter' is usually considered as superior to the 'tailor'. It's a much more highly skilled job.
I've been doing this for years and I'm still learning new things, and kicking myself over mistakes I make. It's a complicated process.
I'd suggest that in general you would only take in the seam at the side panel. The back seam should remain the same - HOWEVER: there will of course be times when the back does need to be adjusted. You need to determine that based on the fit of the back.
In other words: it depends. Look at the fit of the coat - if the back is too wide, then you will need to take it in. If the back is not too wide, but you still have too much room around the coat, then yes, probably you would take in the side seams at the side panel only.
Hope this helps. Bear in mind I'm only an amateur, Rory may have a different opinion and in that case you should follow his advice rather than mine.

Thanks Benjamin!
