I've just started the Padding Canvasses video and I'm a bit confused with the positioning of hair cloth on body canvas. In the Cutting the Canvas Video, Rory says to cut the hair cloth about 1/2" above the shoulder but in the Padding Canvas video he places the hair cloth 1" down from the shoulder seam. In the Padding Canvasses video this results in the hair cloth ending just above the notch. When I place the hair cloth like this, it ends up below the notch. Should the hair cloth have shrunk when I soaked it, or can I just trim it so that it doesn't go down as far?
You're adding an inch of fullness through the chest piece. When this is in there, the hair-cloth should finish above the button. An inch is just an estimate. It really does depend on the length of the chest piece and how much fullness you are comfortable with adding.
Great advice from David. I have nothing to offer beyond what he has said.
Youre going to add fullness to the hair cloth which will bring it up a little and it all gets trimmed so it sits where its suppose to. Just keep it on the break line you marked and keep following along through the pad stitching video. everything looks how it should and it all the excess material gets trimmed down when youre actually attaching the canvas to the forepart.
